I post about what I do with computers quite a bit.

Currently fleet:

2011 Mac mini 4gb ram, 1.25 tb HD, i5

Dell m4800 16gb ram, 512 ssd, i7 (mq4810?)

Microsoft Surface Pro 2 8gb of ram, 256gb ssd, i5 (4200 something)

I got the SP2 last week, it’s way more portable than the m4800 and gives me a pen. With the m4800 on desk duty the mini is no longer necessary.

So I bought this:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

The 3tb was the cheapest one, cheaper than the 2tb and all the higher capacities. I was able to use my coinstar money from a while back. It looks pretty sharp. I’ll use it to get all my photos and music off the Mac mini so I can sell it. The going rate for the 2011 mac mini with my specs is $300+/-.

With the money from the mini I’ll buy some new monitors (my old ones are square and missing pixels). And the docking station for the m4800.

Any good sub $150 monitor’s out there? Or any $300 monitors that would be better than 2 $150 ones?

Also possible oppo discount on the Mac mini.

Whenever I see people post about computers it makes me want to get a new one but I can't justify it since mine works great still 4 years on. I had one laptop last me 5 years but by the end it was so far behind I couldn't do much outside of browser based activities since it was too far behind to play any games.

I’ve been buying Acer G246HL’s for work. They’re around $130, great for everyday but not something I would recommend for gaming/video. Not sure on nicer ones although I have been wanting a nice monitor.

I’m also rocking a Mac Mini, 2012 16gb i5 500ssd and a Precision M4800 16gb i7 500 ssd! Instead of a surface I’ve got a mac book 12, but I’ve been buying SP4's for our remote employees and they’re great.

That’s me with the mini. I bought it new in 2011 and now it can do browser and photo management very slowly.

It’s just taking up desk space. Sure am glad apple products have a premium.

I got a pair of Asus 21.5 inch monitors that go for $99 a piece. Couldn’t be happier with them. Despite what people say, 1 40 inch monitor does not equal 2 20 inchers, you can do so much more with dual monitors .

My current MacBook Air has been the best computer I’ve ever owned. My hp laptop was the second mostly because it lasted as long as it did. Every other desktop I had and one other laptop was 2-3 years before it was outdated or dead. Part of that was because I bought cheap based on what I could afford but Apple builds solid products that last.

They do. I think I’ve just out grown my Mini. Freshman year of high school (2011) had very different computer demands than sophomore year of design school. 4gb can’t do nothing. And even if I upgraded it Adobe only works on 2 machines at any given time. And the Ivy Bridge is getting kinda old.

Once I make a real salary I’ll probably have a nice iMac as a personal computer. I really like what MS is doing with the surface though, and I think I might be a life customer.

I also think Macs handle OS updates very well. I can't imagine running Windows 10 on my old Dell bullshit.

I’d recommend looking for refurb/scratch-and-dent monitors from places like Newegg.

I love my air and I've been waiting to see what apple does with its laptop line now that the MacBook is both bigger and smaller than the air. I really enjoy having a computer that's light and travels well since I find myself away from home for work a lot. But the graphics leave something to be desired compared to more modern machines. It's more than adequate for most things but I do game a bit and the integrated Intel (?) HD4000 doesn't keep up.

That's another good point. It helps when everything is in house. Microsoft somewhat can and tries to work with some older hardware but there's so much variation it can't be optimized as easily as Apple can since they deal with much fewer hardware variations.

What if the scratch is on the screen?

just finished rebuilding my fractal node 202. I had an R9 390 8GB in it and a cryorig c7 air cooler on the i7 6700k but it was too loud and was running hot, so I modded the case (with a dremel) to put in a corsair H55 closed loop liquid AIO. and I swapped the R9 390 for a EVGA SSC 960 GTX mini itx version

Get an IPS monitor, and try to find one with a 21:9 screen ratio (better than two 16:9s imo), something like this: http://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg… (I’ve got the FreeSync version of that one)
